6 FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Editorial COCKPIT TECHNOLOGY - A WONDERFUL THING? by Trey Hughes, MAPA Staff Aviation is enjoying a period of massive and rapid advances in electronic technology at the present time. Over the past decade, we have seen some great new innovations in cockpit presentations and capability designed to make aviation safer while reducing pilot workload yet increasing information available for decision making. Navigation has gone from following concrete arrows on the ground defining the U.S Airmail Beacon System to navigate using a constellation of Global Positioning System satellites orbiting the earth. The Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) is a new National Airspace System due for implementation across the United States in stages between 2012 and NextGen will change the U.S. air traffic control system from radar-based with radio communication to a satellite-based one. GPS technology will be used to shorten routes, save time and fuel, reduce traffic delays, increase capacity, and permit controllers to monitor and manage aircraft with greater safety margins. Radio communications will be increasingly replaced by data exchange and automation will reduce the amount of information the pilot must process at one time. NextGEN will include; Automatic Dependent Surveillance- Broadcast (ADS-B), Collaborative Air Traffic Management Technologies (CATMT), Data Communications (Data Comm), National Airspace System Voice System (NVS), NextGen Weather and System Wide Information Management (SWIM) programs. ADS-B is the satellite-based replacement of ground-based radar used for aircraft sequencing and separation. It uses GPS technology to determine precise aircraft location and share this information with ATC and other equipped aircraft. CATMT is a group of enhancements to the decision and supports report to Canada's
